Why High School Athletes Need More Than Just a Gym Membership

I see it all the time.
High school athletes walk into a commercial gym for the first time and immediately feel out of place. There’s equipment everywhere, people who look like they know exactly what they’re doing, and very little actual guidance. Most athletes aren’t lacking motivation. They’re just unsure.
What exercises actually help my sport?
How much weight should I be lifting?
How do I know if my form is right?
How do I put together a workout that actually makes me stronger or faster?
So many young athletes end up guessing. They copy what someone else is doing, bounce between random workouts online, or avoid movements they don’t feel confident with. And honestly, that’s not their fault. No one teaches you how to train properly when you first step into a gym. That’s why I believe coaching matters so much at this stage.
Having a Coach in Your Pocket
Online coaching isn’t just about getting a workout sent to your phone. It’s about having direction when you would otherwise be guessing.
For a lot of athletes, it’s like having a coach in your pocket. Someone who already thought through the plan, the progression, and how each workout connects back to your sport.
Instead of walking into the gym wondering what to do, you walk in with a purpose.
Training Should Match the Athlete
Not every athlete needs the same thing.
A soccer player, a wrestler, and a volleyball athlete shouldn’t be training the same way. Strength matters, but so does movement quality, injury prevention, and learning how to move well under load.
Good programming meets athletes where they’re at. Some are brand new to lifting. Others already have experience but need structure. The goal isn’t to throw the hardest workout at them. It’s to build confidence and consistency over time.
Learning Form

One of the biggest things I want young athletes to understand is how to do movements properly and safely. Over the years, I’ve seen countless injuries happen when athletes perform exercises in the gym, fitness class, or on their own without proper guidance. When athletes have an online trainer and access to form videos, it take all the guessing out of the movement. Athletes are also required to send form checks to ensure each small movement is being monitored and adjusted when necessary. This is the key to making gains, while staying safe.
The Bigger Picture
The gym can feel intimidating when you’re young. I think every athlete has felt that at some point. I remember the cardio section being my safe space, because I didn't know what to do or where to start.
What changes everything is having guidance. Having someone who helps you build a plan, learn proper movement, and understand how training fits into your bigger goals as an athlete.
Because the goal isn’t just to survive workouts. It’s to build strength, confidence, and habits that carry over into sport and life. When athletes have structure and support, they stop feeling lost in the gym and start feeling like they belong there.
